What is the PC Perspective HW Leaderboard?

Updated May 13, 2012:
Along with the PCPer HWLB its self, you can also head to the PCPer Hardware Leaderboard forum! This forum is where you can discuss my selections and offer your own suggestions. It is also the place for you to talk about the new system build you are working on even if it's NOT based on anything here.

Our Dream System still features Intel's current ultimate CPU, the Socket 2011 i7-3960X as it is much more of an enthusiast platform than the current Ivy Bridge offerings. You need an X79 motherboard to base your Extreme system off of and the MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) is a great choice.  This also means you can have 16GB of quad-channel DDR3-1600 from Corsair, since higher clock speeds than that tend not to be a good return on your investment.  Al's new favourite SSD, the Samsung 830, also shows up in the system this month as 240GB of the fastest SATA3 storage around.  AMD's HD 7970 remains on the Hardware Leaderboard this month since we are still unable to find a reliable source of GTX 680s. Once we do it will certainly claim top spot but for now the custom cooled and overclocked Gigabyte model will be powering the fastest rigs on the planet.

There is also an alternative Dream System, the system so powerful it has gone to plaid! The price more than doubles but you will be running dual Xeon X5650s and two HD7970s.  Soon the Extreme System will move to the new generation of CPUs as EVGA has finally announced the SR-X dual socket LGA2011 motherboard.  Its 480GB Samsung 830 SSD costs almost as much as the processors do.

The new High End system is still based on Intel's SandyBridge platform; offering one of the most flexible, powerful and cost efficient platforms going.  In anticipation of Ivy Bridge hitting stores around Apr 29th, a Z77 board has been introduced to the High End System.  The ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE may not spend a long time on the Leaderboard as the Z77 chipset is not truly aimed at the enthusiast but the feature set is too good to ignore. Samsung's 830 Series 256GB SSD is good enough for the Extreme System and is a reasonable enough price to also appear in the High End System.  NVIDIA also returns to the Leaderboard as not only is the new GTX 670 priced right, it remains available for purchase.

Our Mid-Range System continues to feature a Core i5 2500K sits on an Gigabyte board, this month the GA-Z68AP-D3 (Rev 2.0).  The ZOTAC AMP! is back with a GTX 560 Ti version that is almost the same price as the basic GTX560 but sports extra processor cores. This month sees an SSD arrive in the Mid Range system for the first time, the 128GB SATA 6Gbps OCZ Octane will completely change the overall performance of this build.

There is not much new on the low end as the Budget Build retains the Core i3 2105 and BIOSTAR TZ68A+ which are both the most cost efficient solutions in their class.  A small drop in the price of the Corsair Vengeance kit and Builder Series PSU are welcome since the 750GB HDD is still $100. The HD6670 stays in place as well as the lowest end of AMD's GPUs still costs over $100 offers only a few specific advantages.
